YOUR TASK
Use Japanese book binding to create one blank journal. The design of your journal is completely up to you: decide on the size of your journal, number of pages, type of paper, colour of cover/pages, material used for binding (e.g. wool, ribbon, leather strap, thread), whether it will have a soft or hard cover, etc. You will need to source the materials for this task yourself, however you should discuss everything with your teacher first in case there are supplies at school that can be used. |

What is Book Binding?
Book binding refers to the range of techniques used to create books and magazines. In basic terms, it is the stitching and gluing that holds a book or magazine together.
There are lots of types of binding. A 'case bind' uses a combination of sewing and gluing to create hardcover books; a 'perfect bind' uses gluing to create softcover books/magazines; 'saddle-stitch binding' uses sewing to create smaller/thinner booklets that usually don't have a separate cover; 'comb/spiral binding' punches holes through the spine sides of the pages and then threads a plastic or metal comb/spiral through those holes to hold the pages together.
Japanese book binding techniques use sewing in a creative way so that visibility of the stitches is emphasised to become part of the overall design. There are many different stitching patterns that may be used, and the technique may be used for soft or hardcover books.
