Character Design
Week 1 - Theory Task 1Download the Introductory PowerPoint and complete both homework tasks by Wednesday's lesson.
Week 1 - Theory Task 2PART 1:
All the elements in a painting must work together, and costumes must blend with the lighting and sets to create a coherent look for the frame and the story. The colour of the costumes must conform to the overall palette chosen by the director. Costumes also help the audience immediately identify the central character in a crowd by using colour and silhouette. This is especially true of a character like Spider-Man, who is instantly recognisable by his suit. ForTheAmazingSpiderMan2(2014), costume designer Deborah L. Scott had the task of designing the hero’s iconic suit. Scott said, “Marc Webb, the director, wanted to go back to the comic book references. We researched what colours of red and blue to use on the costume – we researched what proportions of red and blue to use. And should we have a belt or not? We reviewed every piece of the puzzle.” In your folios, answer the following questions, in as much elaborate detail as possible, after watching the clip to the right... Describe the colour palette in the scene? What is the background colour? What did the costume designer do to draw your eye to the main character? Discuss how the colours and silhouettes of the costumes worked with the set. Did they complement the set or contrast with it? How do the costumes and the sets work together to tell the story of the scene? What metaphoric representations do the use of red and yellow play in the scene? |

PART 2:
You are being paid to design and create a new superhero character for an upcoming film. In your folios, you are to design, create, draw and annotate this new superhero character. You should think carefully about every single aspect of the character's costume. (In the note above about Spider-man, they even had discussions about belts!) Your design sketch should take up a full page in your folio on the left page of a double-page spread and should be coloured. On the right page of that same double-page spread, you should write a minimum of 300 words, detailing who this superhero is. What is their name? What is their backstory? What is their alter-ego (e.g. who are they and what do they do when they're just a regular person?) How did they come to be a superhero? What are their super powers (if they have any)? What are their special skills? What makes them a superhero? What is their costume? What special uses does their superhero costume have? (e.g. Batman has his utility belt, Wonder Woman has her golden lasso, etc.) |
Week 2 - Prac (Make-up effects practice)
Week 3 - Character Design Assessment
This is the first of the assessment pieces for this unit. Throughout this unit, you will do two assessment piece (e.g. two photos), but rather than just being "a photo", your end product should be an event. You should be aiming to create something that will wow your audience. The best ones of these will be blown up as poster size (like the black and white ones in the Media Room) for display at the end of year Media Gala and following that, for display in the Media Room.
Your finished photo for this first assessment piece should be a combination of make-up effects AND Photoshop effects. I've placed some Photoshop Effect tutorials to the right and below that you may wish to work through to help you with your planning and design. Your plans should include sketches for what your character will be AND what your scene will be. This should include annotations of costumes AND Photoshop effects. You should write a backstory for your character and scene of 200 words each. In the lead-up to this, you may wish to conduct research and work through a number of Photoshop tutorials (this means complete them, not just watch them. You should watch how a step is done, then pause the tutorial and jump out to Photoshop and complete that step yourself successfully, then jump back to the tutorial and watch the next step, then pause the tutorial, repeat, etc.) It can often be difficult to replicate what a tutorial is doing so just watching it is of no value to you. |
