Representation
Representation involves analysing media representations and how such representations depict, for example, events, people, places, organisations and ideas. Representation involves the selection of images, words, sounds and ideas and the ways in which these are presented, related and ordered. Media codes and conventions help shape a product’s structure and meaning.

Whilst we will look at a variety of Representations in the media this term, the first ones we will be looking at is the Representation of Teenagers, the Representation of Gender and the Representation of Mental Illness.
Have a watch of the first five short films above that look at different representations in the media. "Miss Representation", "Like A Girl" and the TED Talk called "Teach Girls Bravery", looks at messages that are sent about women. "The Mask You Live In" and "Redefining Masculinity", looks at the messages that are sent about men. What do these films say about the representation of men and woman in the media? What are they saying about how people perceive men and women? What are they saying about the roles of men and women in society? How are they doing this? What codes and conventions are used to convey these ideas? How do you define femininity? How do you define masculinity? |
