Creating sound for film and television productions is a very complex and time consuming task. Foley artists, for example, create many of their sound effects from scratch using random items and their creativity, which they record while they're watching playback of the film or television program they're creating sound for. Watch the short film below on the left, titled "The Secret World of Foley" to see Foley Artists in action and develop your understanding of how foley artists work. Pay close attention, as you're going to be creating your own foley sound soon.
Once you've watched "The Secret World of Foley", watch the "Sound in Movies and TV" clip that I've created below on the right.

Sound in Movies & TV |
The Task
Now that you have a better idea about how sound in film and television is created, you're going to create an entire soundscape of your own. Choose one of the trailers below. All of the music and sound effects has been stripped from them. The only sound that exists in them is the dialogue. You are going to create the foley sound AND compose the soundtrack using GarageBand and edit it all in using Final Cut Pro to create a convincing, professional movie trailer. Conversely, you might choose to use sounds and music that aren't appropriate to the trailer to create a comedic trailer that highlights how much sound and music can change the way we view film and television.
The important part to remember of this task, however, is that you're not just downloading a heap of sound effects and music and adding them in. You are taking on the role of a foley artist. You must individually create and record the sounds yourself. You must compose the soundtrack (or soundtracks) yourself. Because I'm a terribly nice fellow, you are allowed to use 5 downloaded sound effects (not music) to include in your final trailer, but no more, (this might be handy for atmospheric sounds or sounds like gunfire). Everything else, however, must be created by you.
You should complete the following steps and in this order:
1. Create a Folder inside your shared OneDrive folder called "Foley Sound".
2. Download the trailer you are going to use (use the download buttons below the trailers)
3. Watch it through
4. Write a two columned list. Down the left hand side, write every single sound effect that you're going to need. Down the right hand side, ideas you have of what you might record to create that sound.
5. All foley sound must be created and edited into the trailer using Final Cut Pro BEFORE you start working on composing the score for the trailer.
6. Once all of your foley sound is edited and finalised, begin composing the score (or scores) for the trailer using GarageBand (generally, there will be different pieces of music throughout trailers to convey the different moods and atmospheres at different times. It would be unusual to just have one similar sounding piece playing all the way through).
7. Once your score is complete, import it into Final Cut Pro and edit it into your trailer.
8. Export the completed trailer from Final Cut Pro.
9. Upload your finished, exported trailer to the "Foley Sound" folder in your OneDrive.
IMPORTANT NOTE: All of your submissions for this task are via your shared folder on the OneDrive. There will be no USB or email submissions accepted. It is your responsibility to ensure you can do this before the due dates below. Coming to me on the day something is due and saying you can't upload will simply mean you can't submit and won't get marks for that component. Set up the Foley Sound folder as instructed above and practice uploading something, anything, a picture of your dog, to that folder to ensure you can successfully log-in, create the Foley Sound folder and upload to it prior to the due dates.
OTHER NOTE: Uploading speeds on home internet accounts are incredibly slow, much slower than download speeds. You are much better off using the school's network to upload big files to the OneDrive. Something that might only take 5 or so minutes at school will take up to 12 hours to upload at home.
DUE DATES:
Planning and sound list submitted to "Foley Sound" folder on OneDrive: Tuesday, 6th September (Week 8, Term 3)
Folder of all recorded foley sounds inside "Foley Sound" folder on OneDrive: Friday, 13th September (Week 9, Term 3)
Final Submission uploaded to "Foley Sound" folder on OneDrive: Friday, 20th September (end of Week 10, Term 3) @ (or before) 4pm
