SWEDED SEQUENCE

Category: Group
Value: 20 Points
Time: 4 weeks
YOUR TASK
Recreate a TV show title sequence shot-for-shot using the principles of Sweding. You should try to avoid using any digital effects at all, although sometimes it might be unavoidable depending on the sequence you choose to recreate.

You will need to spend some time doing careful planning to ensure that you are able to effectively recreate each shot. Also, choose your original sequence (the one you want to recreate) carefully - pick something that will push you to be creative!

What is Sweding?
Sweding is the super low-budget shot-for-shot recreation of movies and TV shows using whatever items are on hand. Sweding is a term that was coined as part of the 2008 Michael Gondry film, Be Kind, Rewind, featuring Jack Black.  In the film, Jack Black’s character, Jerry, accidentally erases all of the data on the tapes in a VHS video store.  In a bid to atone for his mistake, Jerry and his friends decide to re-shoot all of the films they accidentally erased, using whatever props, items and objects they have at their disposal.

In the film, Jerry tells a customer that it’s a technique called “sweding” that originated in Sweden.  Following the film’s success, sweding became an actual thing in the real world, so much so that there is now an annual film competition called Swede Fest (www.swedefest.com), where filmmakers compete for prizes recreating classic films in the “sweding” style, often also including recreating the soundtrack with their voice.
